“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled”
John 14:1-6
-In the fourteenth through sixteenth chapters of John, Jesus is preparing His disciples for the fact that He is about to leave them. He knows that very soon He will be betrayed, arrested, beaten, scourged, tried, sentenced, crucified, and buried. But, He also knows that on the third day He will rise from the dead and later ascend to His Father in Heaven. In these three chapters we have Jesus’ wonderful teaching on the Holy Spirit.
For three years, Jesus had been their life. They had left all to follow Him and now He was about to leave them. He knew that their hearts would be troubled. There were several things that Jesus wanted His disciples to know and whatever you or a friend or loved one may be going through, Jesus also wants you to know these same truths.
Jesus wants you to know…
-THE PEACE: (vs.1)
There are many things in this world that can try to steal our peace. We see, hear, receive, and can even experience bad news everyday. There are many things that can cause our hearts to be troubled. However, in the midst of troubling times, we can be filled with God’s peace that surpasses all understanding. (Phil. 4:6-8)
The sad thing is, so many people look to all the wrong things and places for peace. They think that money, power, position, popularity, or possessions will bring them more peace. They try to find escape, fulfillment, and peace through alcohol, drugs, relationships, etc., and still feel empty inside. Jesus said we will only have true and lasting peace when we know Him. Many people know about Jesus and they have church membership, baptism, good works, etc., but they do not know Jesus.
Do you truly know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord? Have you repented of your sin and believed in Him for forgiveness and for eternal life? Is there evidence of a new heart and a new life in you? Believe on Him today and be born again.
-THE PLACE: (vs.2)
Heaven is real and we know it is real because Jesus said it is. He did not go to prepare a dream world or a figment of the imagination, He went to prepare a place that is more real than anything we know on this earth. One day, this earth will pass away, but Heaven is forever. You also need to know, there are only two places that people will spend all of eternity, Heaven and hell. There is no third place that is a temporary layover. Also, if you reject Christ as your Savior and Lord, no one can pray you out of hell or do enough good deeds to get you out of hell. What you do with Jesus Christ here and now determines where you will spend all of eternity.
The place that Jesus is preparing for those who love Him is more wonderful and beautiful than you and I can imagine. Think for a moment about all the beautiful places in this world. Think about all the wonders and beauty of the stars and planets in the universe. The Bible tells us that God made all of this in just six days, and Jesus has been preparing Heaven for two thousand years? No wonder the Apostle Paul wrote that we cannot even imagine the glory of Heaven. Do you have the assurance that Heaven is your eternal destination and home? The Bible says you can know. (1 John 5:13)
-THE PURPOSE: (vs.3)
Believe it or not, the God of the universe wants to have a personal relationship with you. He wants to know you and He wants you to know Him. One day Jesus is coming back for those who know Him and love Him. He may be coming back very soon. He is coming back to take us with Him so that we can be with Him forever. You may choose to believe this or not, but God is not a liar and Jesus keeps His promises.
There are no other prophetic signs that need to take place before Jesus Christ comes back for those who belong to Him. I once heard an older saint say, “I believe the return of Christ is so soon I have stopped looking for the signs and I’ve started listening for the shout!” (1 Thess. 4:16-18) Are you ready if Jesus Christ were to return today? If He were to come back today, would you be going with Him and with all those who have trusted Him?
-THE PATH: (vss.4-6)
Jesus said we can know the way to Heaven. Friend, the way to Heaven is not religion, the rites and rituals of religion, church membership, keeping the Ten Commandments, or trying to be a good, moral person. The Path is really a Person, Jesus Christ. He alone is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. It may not be popular or politically correct, but no one comes to know God as their Father and no one goes to Heaven except through Jesus Christ.
If there were any other way to Heaven, why would Jesus have allowed Himself to be beaten, mocked, scourged, nailed to a cross, and buried? The truth is, Jesus went through all of that because THERE IS NO OTHER WAY! He is the Way. He did it because He loves you, He wants you to be part of His family, and He does not want you to spend eternity in hell. Can you really reject that kind of love?
Humble yourself before God. Repent of your sin. Give your heart and life to Jesus Christ–%100. You will have the assurance of eternal life in Heaven with the Lord and you will have the peace of God to comfort you in this life. Instead of a troubled heart, you can have a triumphant heart.
