More Tolerable

“Then He (Jesus) began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done because they did not repent.” (Matthew 11:20 NKJV)

No other nation on earth has been more blessed of God than the United States of America.  Our nation was founded upon Scriptural principles, literally birthed in prayer, and led in the beginning by men who desired that this new land truly would be one nation under God.  Not only has America been blessed by God, but America has been a blessing to the nations throughout her history.  No other nation has done more to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or provided more financial and humanitarian aid to others in need than America.

So much has changed in such a brief period of time.  The head is becoming the tail.  I write this article with a broken heart, for I love my country, but my country is turning away from the God by whom she has been so greatly blessed.  Romans 1 is being fulfilled before our very eyes.  The majority is apparently convinced that God has changed His mind and His Word.  Many say they know God, but they are not glorifying Him as God.  Professing themselves to be wise, they have become fools.  They have changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man.  They have exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and they are worshiping the creature rather than the Creator.  And they justify it and believe that God is okay with all of it.

Though this has happened quickly, it has not happened overnight.  We have a generation that has been slowly but surely conditioned through film, sitcoms, books, and liberal teachers and professors that morality is relative, the Bible is an outdated history book, and that Christians who believe we should live our lives according to the Word of God are hateful bigots.

God has done mighty works in, through, and for America and how are we repaying Him?  By taking prayer and His Word out of the public arena, by murdering tens of millions of babies in the womb, and by declaring, condoning, and  even celebrating the things that God clearly calls sin.

Based on the words of Jesus in the tenth and eleventh chapters of Matthew, I have to wonder, “Will it be more tolerable for Tyre, Sidon, Sodom and Gomorrah than for America on the day of judgment?”  That is a sobering thought.  Jesus gives us the key to avoiding this judgment and that key is repentance.  Will we repent, or will it take another catastrophic event that makes 9/11 pale in comparison to bring us in humility back to God?

Is there hope?  There is always hope.  There was another turbulent time in our nation that was followed by a Jesus Revolution.  Are we on the brink of a long-awaited, long prayed for revival and spiritual awakening?  I see among this current generation of young people many of the characteristics of that generation from the early seventies.  Like the Jacob Generation mentioned in Psalm 24, there are many today who are seeking God’s face more than God’s hand.  The good news is, anyone can be part of this Jacob Generation, regardless of age.  Will you?  Will you seek God and cry out to Him more than ever before?  Will you, with a humble and repentant heart, be desperate for Him?  In many ways, the future of our nation depends on the response now of God’s people.

While we take our stand, remember that we are to do all things in a Christ-like way with the love of Christ.  Speak the truth in love, but speak the truth!

In Christ’s service,

***For a great reminder of how God worked in mighty ways during the Jesus Movement and a wonderful encouragement and challenge for today, be sure to see the Woodlawn Movie that comes out in just a few weeks.  May the Lord use this film to spark a nationwide revival!
