“Life is the sum total of all bodily processes and their relationships/interaction with their environment.”  This was the definition of life taught by my high school biology teacher to generations of students.  Many of us still remember this definition years after graduation.  This may be a good scientific definition of life, but is that all there is to this human existence?  Are we really just a sum total of bodily processes?  And, while I’m asking questions, “Does ontogeny truly recapitulate phylogeny?”  (This was another favorite saying of our teacher and personally, I don’t think it does.  Confused?  Look it up!)

Those of us who know God know that in the beginning He created all things.  We also know that all things were made through Jesus and without Him nothing was made that was made.  John goes on to write in the first chapter of his gospel that in Jesus Himself there is life. Jesus said of Himself, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.(John 14:6)  Jesus is Life.  There is no life apart from Him.  Oh, there may be existence; there may be a sum total of bodily processes and relationships, but there is no real life without Jesus Christ.  You see, Jesus not only gives physical life, He alone can give spiritual life, eternal life, and abundant life.  Knowing God through Jesus Christ is not only about eternal life in Heaven one day, knowing Him means that we have His abundant life even while we are in this world. (John 10:10)

Jesus came not only to give you life, but to be your life.  One of my favorite phrases in Scripture is when Paul wrote in Colossians 3, “When Christ who is our life…”  I pray that He is your life and, if He is, I pray that you will share His life with someone else today.

In Christ’s service,
